Week 5 thoughts

I was discussing my course with a colleague today. I began assessing all of the different ways we are expected to communicate in this course: RSS, blog, wiki, e-mail, class discussion threads (2 for the week, plus the cafe), skype chat, phone calls, video chat, group chat, chat with the instructor, chat with the instructor and at least one other student...

I'm certain I missed something in there, like I missed the "By Thursday of each week" (I was thinking it was Sunday, my bad) All of this coupled with the readings has at times left me wondering how I have had time to get involved with facebook, twitter, diigo, and juice all at the same time.

Knowing how and when to use the various synchronous and asynchronous communication is the big lesson I take away this week. Can't wait for the next drink from the fire hose.

I feel your pain. This week pretty much nothing happened by Thursday, so my bad. Half the time I can't remember if I have been on Skpe or not or when. Its been a hectic term. Enjoy the weather!

Kent, Rachel-

I understand too. Work and Walden have been very hectic this week. ...And already registration is open for the summer quarter. One of my classes is also doing a blogging exercise and trying to keep track of their posts caused me to created an Excel spreadsheet. The students seem to be enjoying it so far. It started last week and will continue throughout the fourth quarter. Their physics lessons are being delivered in blog form.

I agree! We communicate in so many different ways with this class that I sometimes forget if I've gone through them all. I almost forgot about Skype this week with everything else going on, but managed to fit in a nice chat.

Kent, Rachel, Pam, Mrs. Morris, Liz,

You are so right! Time and time management are so elusive this term! There is never enough time in the day, week, or month to complete course requirements and have a life of any type. Hectic is an understatement and I, too, cannot remember what I responded to . Good idea to use spreadsheet, Pam. That may help me in the last weeks of this course.

I have not joined you on Skype because I have been hospitalized for two weeks with uncontrollable blood pressure. (Does not seem to be stress-related as doctors search for the cause). I hope to be released soon and join everyone on Skype. I am only able to 'steal' a few minutes from the evening shift nurses to use the Internet. Just what I needed--another hindrance!

Kent,
Are you using RSS feed?
What types of feeds do you have coming to you?
What do you think is the best thing about RSS feed in your life?
What is the worst thing about it?

I love my RSS feed. I have lots of Ed tech stuff streaming in. I have a few other topics as well, all related to teaching. At this point, teaching and Ed tech are my life, so nothing "personal" other wise.

The only problem with it, in my opinion, is I can't possible read them all. I have to pick and choose, but that really is the idea I think. Whatever I miss, I miss, and whatever I gain, I gain!

So, I'm off to create a wiki for my math department!

I think I'll go get a drink from that fire hose now too.

I have been using RSS feeds for a few weeks now and I experience much of the same frustration you mention. There is so much to choose from, and so little time. I also have the same problem I have with e-mail, blogs and phone calls; they are not the most urgent part of my life.
